The lake is inhabited by the gwyniad, a white fish of the salmon family unique to Llyn Tegid. One legend says the lake was created because of the cruelty of the wild lord, Tegid Foel. A harpist at a palace banquet heard a voice warning "vengeance has come" and was led away by a bird to a hilltop. When he awoke in the morning there was a huge lake where the palace had been.
There are several boating clubs here and this is a popular venue for water sports, with training available at the Bala Adventure & Water Sports Centre. While the National White Water Centre has one of the longest and steepest commercial whitewater rafting runs in Britain. There are also many opportunities for exercising on terra firma with countryside walking attracting large numbers of ramblers to this beautiful and evocative landscape.
All prices start at £30 per person per night and include morning breakfast and VAT.
