Plas Dolmelynllyn

plas dolmelynllyn country hotel Plas Dolmelynllyn is a beautiful, tranquil country hotel set in magnificent scenery. Family owned and managed by a father and daughter team, Jon Barkwith responsible for general management and Joanna as head chef.

Plas Dolmelynllyn is situated just off the A470 at Ganllwyd about 5 miles North of Dolgellau. The nearest railway stations are at Machynlleth and Barmouth, whilst National coaches are available from Dolgellau.

There has been a house on this site for several hundred years and part of the Old Hall dates back to the 16th century.

Every bedroom has a different decorative theme and all have items which nowadays have become essentials, such as: private en-suite facilities, direct dial telephone, colour television, clock radio, bathrobe and hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities.

The dining room is the centre of the house - where Jo, from her kitchen presents a wide choice menu, including vegetarian options. Her award winning cooking has been described as highly imaginative traditional British. There is a choice of any four courses plus a selection of teas or coffee. Apart from vegetarian choices, other diets can always be catered for, given prior notice.

plas dolmelynllyn country hotel longue Next to the dining room is the Conservatory Bar where there is a battle for supremacy between the plants and the bottles. The bottles extend into the cellar where there is a comprehensive list of over a hundred different wines.

The stream that bounds the hotels formal gardens flows into a small lake - part of the 1200 acres of mountains, meadow and the Coed y Brenin Forest. This area of land is owned by the National Trust and one can walk all day without seeing a car or needing to cross a road.

The hotel has its own fishing of half a mile single bank on the River Mawdach as well as the 10 miles of single bank of the Dolgellau Angling Association. This is free to guests staying for 4 nights or more.

Guests staying 4 nights or more also receive temporary membership of the Dolgellau golf club. The course of 9 holes is one of the prettiest and most beautifully situated one can find.

The other two main pastimes are simply walking, whether it be a strenuous climb up Cader Idris or a walk along the nature trail by the side of the Mawddach Estuary, or a stroll round the Precipice Walk and the Llyn Cynwch.

plas dolmelynllyn country hotel longue Dolgellau is now one of the foremost Mountain Biking Centres in Europe. The new purpose-built paths and trails (from easy to difficult) at Maesgwym are less than a mile from Dolmelynllyn - the hotel has secure accommodation for mountain bikes (and their riders!) The site, in the Brenin Forest, is being developed by the Forestry Commission and whilst already being one of the best in Europe it is anticipated to soon be of world class - so why not experience the rigours and mud of mountain biking before returning to the warmth, comfort and superb food at Dolmelynllyn?!

For those who prefer to travel, there are many places to visit such as castles, stately homes, slate caverns, gold mines (one nearby), waterfalls (the Rhaeadr Dhu is 10 minutes walk) . . . . and of course all the great little railways of Wales.

If all this seems too exhausting, why not just stay in, read a book, sit in the sun (???) and relax.

This is one of the least known parts of Wales - South Snowdonia has all that the English Lake District can offer but with less people and less traffic. For further details or for our full colour brochure please do not hesitate to contact us.
